The Muslim League, under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, called for Direct Action Day. This was announced on August 16, 1946, and aimed to protest against the failure of negotiations for a separate Muslim state and to demonstrate support for the creation of Pakistan. The day led to widespread communal riots and violence across India.
