The highly viscous and deforming region of the upper mantle that lies just below the lithosphere is called the asthenosphere. The asthenosphere is a layer of the Earth’s mantle that is characterized by its relatively low viscosity, which allows it to flow slowly. It is located beneath the rigid lithosphere and extends to depths of about 200-250 kilometers (about 120-150 miles) below the Earth’s surface.
